10 Must-Have Free Apps for the iPad 2

With more than 15 million people owning the first generation iPad, there will inevitably be a rush of Apple loyalists and first-time buyers lining up to purchase the new iPad 2. Unlike when the iPad first launched a year ago with only a few dozen apps, there are now nearly 70,000 apps fully optimized for the iPad and readily available to iPad 2 owners. Here's a look at 10 you shouldn't go without.

1. iBooks: We're all about eBook Readers, so yeah, we LOVE this app. iBooks is an easy way to download and read books. iBooks includes the iBookstore, where you can download the latest best-selling books or your favorite classics – day or night. Browse your library on a beautiful bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages with a swipe or a tap, and bookmark or add notes to your favorite passages.

2. Friendly for Facebook: With this app, users can upload and share photos with friends, leave comments, swipe through slideshows and view photos in full-screen, etc. Enjoy an enhanced Facebook browsing experience, without having to pinch and zoom in; multi-account support; photo uploading, sharing and commenting; wall comments and notifications; play Facebook games; customize colors and fonts; and yada, yada, yada. Trust us, you must get it.

3. Pandora: It's like being the program director for a radio station (minus the payola and freebies.) Create and listen to custom “radio stations” by your favorite artists, songs, and genre. Pandora learns what you do and don't like, fine-tuning song selections streamed commercial-free.

4. Angry Birds Free: Tired of being an active participant in society? We've got an app for you. You will become addicted to this best-selling game, where players seek revenge on the pigs who stole their bird eggs. (Yeah, we don't quite understand it either, but we can't stop playing it.) This is the free version, but if you like it, it's worth spending the $4.99 to get the full game.

5. Skype: We have much love for Skype, which allows you to make and receive calls for free to other Skype users. It also supports calls to non-Skype users, chat via IM, and talk face-to-face using Skype’s video chat with anyone, anywhere in the world. Truly awesome.

6. Kayak: Want to get away? Here's your app. Find flights, hotels and vacation packages. Track travel deals and plan vacations based on your budget, search user reviews and photos, etc. The only thing missing is the smell of the suntan lotion.

7. The Weather Channel: No more waiting for the yapping TV weatherman with the goofy tie to tell you to "bundle up." Instead get your instant local forecast, severe weather alerts, and view and interact with weather maps.

8. Movies by Flixster: Watch trailers, search showtimes, buy tickets, read reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, and share ratings with friends. Plus, the app icon is a bucket of popcorn.

9. Evernote: Tired of forgetting everything, and sticky notes that you can never find? Save and capture ideas, notes, projects and experiences on any computer and sync across your iPad/iPhone, Mac or Windows desktop.

10. Netflix: OK, so you have to be a Netflix subscriber to use it, but if you are, it's awesome. You can instantly watch TV shows & movies streaming from your account right to your iPad 2.
