What Are Amazon Coins?

Amazon announced another new way for app and game developers to make money on Kindle Fire—introducing Amazon Coins—the new virtual currency for purchasing apps, games and in-app items on Kindle Fire. Amazon Coins is an easy way for Kindle Fire customers to spend money in the Amazon Appstore, offering app and game developers another substantial opportunity to drive traffic, downloads and increase monetization. When Amazon Coins launches in the U.S. this May, Amazon will give customers tens of millions of dollars’ worth of free Amazon Coins to spend on developers’ apps on Kindle Fire in the Amazon Appstore. Amazon will also make it quick and easy for customers to buy additional Amazon Coins using their Amazon accounts.

Amazon Appstore developers will earn their standard 70 percent revenue share when customers make purchases using Amazon Coins. Developers with apps and games currently in the Amazon Appstore for the U.S. don’t need to do anything with their apps to capitalize on this new opportunity. Developers not yet in the Amazon Appstore should submit their apps soon—only apps submitted and approved by April 25 will be ready when Kindle Fire customers have Amazon Coins to spend across the Amazon Appstore. Developers can learn more about Amazon Coins today at http://www.amazon.com/amazon-coins.

“Developers continue to report higher conversion rates on Amazon compared to other platforms,” said Paul Ryder, Vice President of Apps and Games for Amazon. “Now we have another new way to help developers reach even more of our millions of customers. Amazon Coins gives customers an easy way to spend money on developers’ apps on Kindle Fire in the Amazon Appstore—and we’re giving customers tens of millions of dollars in Amazon Coins to get started. Developers who aren’t yet in the Amazon Appstore will want to make sure their apps have been submitted and approved by April 25 so they’re ready for customers to start spending their Amazon Coins.”
"We've already found that the average revenue per user on Amazon is higher than other Android platforms," said Keith Shepherd, CEO of Imangi Studios. "We're very excited about the monetization opportunity with Amazon's new virtual currency."
"Everyone recognizes Amazon's success in the e-commerce world – now the Amazon Appstore has become a major player in the mobile app marketplace," said Misha Lyalin, ZeptoLab's CEO. "Amazon's new virtual currency is designed to open new opportunities for developers and make things easier for customers. This is a great example of appstore innovation and we want to support it."
"We've been extremely pleased with how well our games monetize on Amazon," said Michael Grobe, Chief Financial Officer of GameCircus. "We're very excited about the launch of Amazon's new virtual currency."
Amazon Coins is the latest in a series of new features and services for developers that make Amazon the most complete end-to-end ecosystem for building, monetizing and marketing their apps and games. Recent announcements include:
  • In-App Purchasing for Mac, PC and web-based games, enabling developers to let customers use their Amazon accounts to purchase virtual goods and currencies from games on those platforms
  • Game Circle, which includes capabilities like Achievements, Leaderboards, Friends, and Whispersync for syncing games across devices, and leads to better engagement with games
  • Game Connect, which lets developers marry the ease and security of shopping on Amazon with the convenience of having virtual goods delivered directly to customers' game accounts
  • A/B Testing, a service that helps developers improve app functionality, retain customers and increase monetization
  • Adobe AIR Native Extensions, which makes it simple for Adobe Flash developers to add In-App Purchasing and Game Circle features to their apps and games
  • Amazon Mobile App SDK Eclipse Plugin (beta) allows developers to rapidly and reliably integrate Amazon APIs into their Android projects, speeding up development and cutting down on project setup time

Amazon's 10 Best Books of 2012

Amazon book editors revealed their annual list of the Best Books of the Year. This annual feature includes the Editors’ Picks for the Top 100 Books of the Year and Top 10 lists in over two dozen categories, from Literature & Fiction to Children’s Books to Celebrity Picks, a new feature this year that includes favorites chosen by well-known people, including Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, Salman Rushdie, Molly Ringwald, and more. To see all of the Best Books of 2012, or to download any of the picks to your Kindle, visit www.amazon.com/bestbooks2012.

“Our team of Amazon editors is very passionate about books, and it was tough to choose just one for the top of our list this year,” said Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle at Amazon.com. “We are confident that we’ve chosen a list that customers will be excited about. Our top choice comes from the venerable author, Louise Erdrich; ‘The Round House’ has been a team favorite since we first read it this past summer, and we kept coming back to this beautifully written novel as our best book of the year.”
Here’s a look at the Top 10 editors' picks for the year:
1. The Round House” by Louise Erdrich: Likely to be dubbed the Native American “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Erdrich’s moving, complex and surprisingly uplifting new novel tells of a boy’s coming of age in the wake of a brutal, racist attack on his mother.
2. The Yellow Birds: A Novel” by Kevin Powers: With this compact and emotional debut novel, Iraq War veteran Powers eyes the casual violence of war with a poet’s precision, moving confidently between scenes of blunt atrocity and almost hallucinatory detachment.
3. Gone Girl: A Novel” by Gillian Flynn: Masterfully plotted from start to finish, the suspense doesn’t waver for one page. It’s one of those books you will feel the need to discuss immediately after finishing. The ending punches you in the gut.
4. The End of Your Life Book Club” by Will Schwalbe: As much an homage to literature as to the mother who shared it with him, Schwalbe’s chronicling of his mother’s death to cancer—they wait, they talk, they read together—is nothing less than captivating.
5. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk: A Novel” by Ben Fountain: Debut novelist Fountain follows a squad of marines as they engage in a “victory tour” in the States. Set mostly during halftime at a Dallas Cowboy’s football game, Fountain skillfully illustrates what it’s like to go to war, and how bizarre and disconcerting it can be for these grunts to return from combat to the country they love.
6. Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity” by Katherine Boo: This searing portrait of life in a Mumbai slum reads like a novel, but it’s all-too-true. Pulitzer Prize-winner Boo’s writing is superb, and the depth and courage of her reporting from this hidden world is astonishing.
7. A Hologram for the King” by Dave Eggers: Both disturbing and funny, this novel from onetime wunderkind Eggers shows surprising depth. A man’s wayward attempt to find himself and retake his life delivers him to Saudi Arabia but the journey abroad is also internal, and it ends up saying as much about life in America as in the Middle East.
8. The Middlesteins: A Novel” by Jami Attenberg: A quick read that’s more complex than it seems at first, this story about a Midwestern Jewish family is both recognizable (sometimes uncomfortably so) and entertainingly idiosyncratic.
9. Mortality” by Christopher Hitchens: Like the late author himself, this book is funny, smart, entertaining and unflinching to the end. “Mortality” has the power to change ideas that you might have held immutable—which is one of the best things you can say about a book.
10. The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green: This soulful novel originally written for teenagers tackles big subjects—life, death, love—with the perfect blend of levity and heart-swelling emotion.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Quick Charge Your Kindle Fire HD with Amazon Kindle PowerFast

PRODUCT REVIEW: There's nothing more aggravating than being in the middle of a great eBook and your Kindle's battery runs out. And let's face it, we all get lost in our books, so it's easy to do. Well, now you can speed up the time it takes to re-charge your Kindle or Kindle Fire HD quickly with PowerFast. OK, so maybe not "quickly" but "quicker." Here are the quick charge times for each Kindle:

• Charges Kindle Fire HD 8.9" in under 5 hours
• Charges Kindle Fire HD 7" in under 4 hours
• Charges Kindle Fire in under 3 hours

For example, it takes over 13 hours to charge a Kindle Fire HD 7" via a computer, so 3-4 hours is a huge improvement. In our tests, we found that it actually charged our Kindles even fast than what the manufacturer claims.

PowerFast uses with the black micro USB cable included with the new Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD devices.

PRICE: $19.99 (or only $9.99 if you're buying with a Kindle.)

VERDICT? Faster is better. We'll never charge any other way.

5 Awesome iPad Mini Cases and Covers for Kids

If you are getting your child an iPad Mini for Christmas you may want to look into getting an extremely durable and fun case to go along with it. iPad Mini cases come complete with specialized covers that allow your kids to protect their iPad while still accessing all of their content without having to worry about scratching the screen or putting marks in any of the finish. There are specialized cases with designs for boys, girls, and many different kids’ interests. Here are some of the five best iPad Mini cases available for kids.

This iPad Mini case has it all. The kickstand capability makes this an excellent choice for a tabletop or to use with a separate keyboard. Many kids find it difficult to hold their iPad mini and having a kickstand on the back makes it very easy to play games and access applications without having to worry about holding the iPad itself. The case comes in multiple colors and comes with a great hardshell that’s constructed out of silicone. Even if your kids dropped their iPad Mini, this is an excellent case that includes a cover that will stand up to accidents (and they happen) as well as daily use.
PRICE: $19.95
This cute iPad Mini case resembles a cartoon character and can stand on its own. Complete with legs and arms the iGuy doesn't have the kickstand that some other cases have but it will stand on a tabletop making it very easy to access content from a desk or coffee table. This product has been drop tested and is made using a foam construction making it very lightweight. It may not be as tough as some of the other cases available but it does come at a medium price range and has a very fun and funky design. And kids seem to love it.
PRICE: $23

The OtterBox case comes with a full protective screen guard that makes this a great case for putting your iPad mini into a bag and preventing any scratches to the screen. The case comes in three colors giving kids lots of choice (we love the pink for girls). The design is fairly plain and professional making this a great choice if you are looking for an iPad mini case as well. The polycarbonate shell works to protect against all scratches without completely compromising your sensitivity and making it easy to still use the touchpad while the iPad is inside the cover.
PRICE: $63

The KaysCase iPad mini cover comes in purple blue, pink or black and is one of the more inexpensive options available. The leather exterior and microfiber interior works to protect the iPad from any scratches or damage but it may not have the same toughness that a strong silicone case or polycarbonate shell will have against dropping a tablet. This case also comes with a kickstand on the back making it easy for kids to access content while their iPad mini is on a table.
PRICE: $16

This case comes in pink blue and black and is designed to be extremely kid friendly. The great part about this case is that it comes with a handle making the entire case very easy for kids to walk with and carry. The handle makes this iPad mini cover resemble a lunch box were small briefcase. It is constructed using shock absorbing double enforced silicone to help provide the best possible drop protection for an iPad mini.  Although it does not have the kickstand feature, this case is probably one of the toughest around and one of the better cases designed for kids.
PRICE: $25

Consumer Reports' Top 10 Electronics of 2012

One of our favorite publications, Consumer Reports, has announced its Top 10 Electronics of 2012 For Performance And Innovation. While Consumer Reports tested more than 600 smart phones, tablets, TVs and more for its December Annual Electronics Issue, only ten standout products made the short list for performance and innovation.

The Consumer Reports Top Ten Electronics list calls out an Android smart phone champion, a tip-top 58-inch LCD HDTV, a loaded lightweight digital camera, and a superb stereo speaker system that's a Wi-Fi winner, among other distinguished products.

The full list can be found online at www.ConsumerReports.org and in the December 2012 issue of Consumer Reports, which is on newsstands now. Product highlights from the list include:

Groundbreaking tablet. Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (16GB, $500). The 10-inch Galaxy Note adds capabilities that no other tablet, not even the Apple iPad, currently offers. An excellent performer overall, it almost matches the superb battery life of the iPad and adds a memory-card slot that its rival lacks.

The world's smartest camera. Nikon Coolpix S800c ($350) This 16-megapixel, Wi-Fi-enabled point-and-shoot camera is the first that CR has seen that runs Google's Android operating system and the apps that go with it. The apps enable users to edit an image, quickly and easily post it on Facebook and create a slideshow with music. CR's tests weren't fully completed by press time, but the S800c looks promising overall.

First ultrawide TV. Vizio CinemaWide XVT3D580CM
($2,000) Cinephiles finally have a TV that displays flicks in all their wide-screen splendor. This 58-inch LCD set is the first Consumer Reports has tested with an ultrawide, 21:9 display that mimics the shape of a movie-theater screen.

Apple's best phone yet. iPhone 5 (16GB, $200). The iPhone 5 builds on its predecessors' strengths and adds new features, putting it head and shoulders above previous iPhones. It has a bigger screen with excellent sharpness, a thinner profile, 4G access, and an expanded role for Siri, the super voice assistant. Also, it's the best phone camera Consumer Reports' testers have seen yet. Requires two-year contract.

To see the entire list, visit www.ConsumerReports.org.
